Science Snorkeling Programs

Science Snorkel Tour

About: This snorkel tour is a unique opportunity to explore the ocean along the coast of Catalina while studying the fish populations and contributing meaningful data to Bleu World’s Catalina Monitoring Program. This long-term community science program is designed to assess the health of our ecosystems as our climate changes over time.

Kelp Forest Surveys: The search for fish begins as soon as you enter the water. While swimming through the kelp forest, you will record every fish species you observe. We will provide you with an underwater slate and a fish identification sheet for reference during the survey giving you the opportunity to not only record accurate data, but learn more about the kelp forests in the process.

Monitoring Site: Casino Point Dive Park is a No-Take State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) and thanks to its protected status, the dive park is full of vibrant life. This site is home to a seasonal population of the critically endangered Giant Black Sea Bass who spend their time in the healthy Giant Kelp and undergrowth that covers the area. There are schools of fish as far as the eye can see that draw sea birds and sea lions who swim through looking for their next meal. Located just off the coast of the casino building in Avalon, the ecosystem found beneath the surface of this site is well worth the trip.

Science Snorkel Tour

with Wet Spot Rentals

About: We’ve partnered with Wet Spot Rentals to offer our Science Snorkel Tour at Lover’s Cove, the second marine protected area in Avalon.

Monitoring Site: Lover’s Cove is a State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) and with kelp forests covering the entire length of the cove, there is life everywhere you look. There are many species of juvenile fish that use the shallow kelp beds as their nurseries while larger schools of fish pass through the deeper kelp forests on their way down the coast. Located just past the Mole on the outskirts of Avalon, the ecosystem found beneath the surface of this site is well worth the trip.
